1. Getting paid a fair amount for the work done

     - This article comments on unfair pay for actors. It talks about how the AEA functions, and how it creates wage problems for actors.

2. Artistic labor is labor

     - This article on the new strike provides some background on the relationship between AEA and the labs and includes quotes from AEA leadership. Only AEA's side of the disagreement is explained.

3. Gender discrimination

     -This article addresses that 2 out of the 3 claims of discrimination filed by previous employees of the Guthrie Theatre were found in favor of the Theatre. The article includes quotes from both the theatre and the female employee who filed the claims.

4. Theatre is collaborative and also undervalued

     - The above article details the issues associated with being a dramaturg in England today. It discusses how the work of a dramaturg is a point of contention with other members of the creative team because dramaturgs have no defined space in the English rehearsal room. 

5. Theatres cutting costs has a human cost

     - The above article presents first-hand accounts of the effects of the Abbey Theatre's (Dublin,         Ireland) new strategy towards their budget after costly deficits in their net income over the past few years.

Theatre Issues class

This was the first semester of the Theatre Issues class. Every week (or two - some topics needed two weeks), we picked a new topic to discuss. These are topics that are being discussed in the professional theatre world and written about in theatre journals, newspapers, and blogs. They are affecting the lives of people doing and seeing theatre. The students posted relevant articles from theatre publications and summarized them for their classmates. Then we discussed them in terms of the big points that stuck out to us.

Throughout the semester the students have taken these conversations into their other courses and theatre experiences. As they move on from CofC the hope is that their awareness of them will help them to be leaders in the field.
